Make your first pattern in Glasswright.

1. Create a pattern and add a reference

Create a new Glasswright document. On iPhone or iPad, tap Add Reference and take a photo or choose an image from Photos or Files. On Mac, choose File → Import Reference Image. Fade the image in the inspector if you need more contrast while tracing.

2. Choose a drawing tool

On iPhone or iPad, open Tools and choose Draw. On Mac, choose Draw above the canvas. Use the drawing-style menu to choose Freehand, Curve, Point Path, Straight, or a preset such as Triangle, Right Triangle, Rectangle, or Circle. Drag to size the shape; hold Shift on a keyboard for equal dimensions. Draw with a finger on iPhone or iPad, with Apple Pencil on a supported iPad, or with the pointer on Mac. Pinch to zoom and use two fingers to pan on a touch screen.

The drawing workflow below is available in Glasswright 1.4 or later. Freehand fits the line you trace. For a simple bend, choose Curve, drag between two endpoints, release, then move or drag to bend the line. On Mac, click to finish; on touch screens, choose Finish. Choose Point Path for longer outlines and S-curves: place points, choose Smooth or Corner for the next one, then Finish. Path Actions closes the outline or backtracks. Cancel discards an unfinished preview.

To refine a saved seam, select it and turn on Edit Curve. Drag a round bend or square point, or choose a control in the Control menu. Point Actions inserts or removes points, switches smooth/corner joins, and offers exact positions. Turn on Handles for precise Bézier controls; Link Directions keeps a smooth join. For Pencil or finger shape assistance, enable Shape Assistbefore drawing Freehand, then adjust the offered line or arc and Finish, or choose Keep Freehand for your original trace.

3. Undo or redo a line

Tap Undo immediately after drawing a line to remove it. On iPhone, Undo and Redo are in the bar below the canvas. On iPad they are in the top toolbar. On Mac, choose Edit → Undo or press Command-Z; press Shift-Command-Z to redo.

4. Close each piece

Bring a line end near another seam or the pattern edge. The target highlights and the line snaps closed. Every closed region becomes a piece automatically. If the status shows a leak, use the leak control to highlight the open seam and close the gap.

5. Select seams and choose glass

Choose Select on iPhone or iPad, or Edit on Mac, then drag a line or shape to move it. Shift-click or marquee on Mac to select several seams; long-press another seam on iPhone or iPad to add or remove it. Selected seams move together. Drag a blue point to reshape a seam, or drag the round handle above the selection to rotate it. Hold Shift on a keyboard for 15° rotation steps. A completed move, rotation, or mirrored copy takes one Undo step.

Choose Color, select a swatch, and then select a piece to assign that glass. Switch among Design, Assembly, and Glass Cut views to inspect the composition, seams, piece numbers, and cutting outlines.

6. Practice symmetry and spacing

In Glasswright 1.4 or later, try this optional exercise in a new blank pattern. It teaches the layout controls without changing your flower tracing.

1. Choose Draw, then select Right Triangle from the drawing-style menu. Draw a small triangle near the left side, leaving room for two more shapes.
2. Choose Select on iPhone/iPad or Edit on Mac. Drag the round rotation handle to try a new angle, then use Undo to return to the starting angle.
3. Open Mirror beside Rotate. Try Flip Horizontal or Flip Vertical to reflect the selection in place. On Mac the same actions are in Edit → Mirror.
4. Choose Mirror Copy to the Right, then drag the new copy farther right to leave a visible gap. The copy is selected automatically and is independent of the original. New copies start without glass colors.
5. Choose Mirror Copy to the Right again. Drag this third shape right until purple dimensions show two equal gaps. You can also drag a shape between two neighbors to center it with equal gaps, or use the same technique in a column.
6. Open Arrange → Equal Spacing to turn gap snapping and its dimension guides off or on. It starts enabled and remembers your choice across launches. Snap Object Bounds separately controls edge and center snapping. Nearby seams still join automatically.

For an exact layout after selecting several shapes, Arrange can align their edges or centers to the selection or work area. Distribute Horizontally or Distribute Vertically makes equal gaps between at least three selected objects. Undo reverses each changed layout action in one step.

Create a uniform grid

On iPhone or iPad, choose Tools → Create Grid. On Mac, use Create Grid in the toolbar or Edit → Create Pattern Grid. Pick a rectangular or triangular preset, set rows, columns, physical size, and position, then check the preview before creating it. A grid moves as one selection, and Undo removes the whole insertion.

7. Capture your glass with iPhone

In the editor, open Tools and choose Scan Glass with Camera. Place the sheet on a contrasting surface and mark its four corners. Check the approximate dimensions, then tap Send to Mac to add the scan to your nearby Mac workflow.

8. Print or export

Open Workshop Output when the pieces are closed. Print at actual size or share a PDF. Glasswright can also export the glass list and cutter files. Measure a known dimension on a paper test before cutting glass.
